Beautiful Black & White

iPhone X dual 12mp camera: wide angle lens at f/1.8 & telephoto lens at f/2.8 & f.2.4

Black and white photography has become a recent point of interest to me. I am fascinated with the new depth created in an image when color is removed, causing the viewer to draw deeper meaning from the subject in focus. Color photography is equally beautiful, but it causes the viewer to take in the surroundings around the subject in addition to the subject itself. The beauty of black and white photography demands the user to stop, study what is going on with the subject, and drink in the somber mood emanating from the image, hence leaving more impacted that when first arrived.

In all my images, I used the 3 x 3 grid on my phone to deliberately experiment with different compositions. It was also with the leaf image that I discovered that my phone’s camera can pick up shallow depth-of-field very well.

Before I take an image, I consider what would be a great contrast before converting to black and white on my phone. I am big into story-telling, so I look for what will draw a viewer in and hopefully inspire him or her to see their surroundings with more appreciation. I can’t tell you how often I see small, yet amazing, details around me.
